How a Camera Works

"How a Camera Works" is a must learning article where a learner will get his lesson about how a camera really works. The camera is hardware or an optical device that helps us taking photographs or to keep the framing of a memorable moment. One must know about the mechanism of the camera, how it takes an image before starting photography, or want to be a Pro Photographer.

Basically, it consists of a lightproof box where photosensitive film or plate box placed inside. Firstly, the camera's shutter opens then it closes, between them the photosensitive film with light records the image onto the film, when a picture is taken.

Essential Parts of Camera

A camera is almost like a human eye. Its method of work is also similar to the human eye. The part of a camera is described below before knowing the "How a Camera Works"

Lens – It focuses the light onto the film. The digital compact camera consists of several layers of lenses. These lenses providing properties like focusing, zoom, and distortion and it’s a correction. All these lenses mechanically interconnected.

Aperture - Every camera has an aperture. It is Sometimes fixed. But It can usually adjustable. Mainly aperture is a hole and varies in size to control the amount of light falling on the sensor.

Sensor - Camera consists of millions of pixel sensors that we get in the image sensor inside. Each of the sensors includes a photodetector. As mechanism says, light enters the camera through the lens, then it strikes the sensor, there it causes each photodetector to accumulate an electric charge based on the amount of light that strikes it. Finally, the camera converts the charge to pixels that make up the photo.

Shutter – It Controls the length of time that light falls on the film.
A shutter exposes the film or digital sensor to light. It projected for a given period of time. Duration might be from 1/4000 seconds to 30 seconds according to the capacity of the camera.

ViewFinder/LCD Screen – If you immediately want to see the image have taken then you must need View Finder/LCD Screen. The LCD screen on digital cameras allows images to be viewed immediately, so adjustments should be made to improve shots.

Flash
 – It is an artificial source of extremely intense light. Flash can be added to photos shot with all the digital cameras. The flash fires just before the photo are snapped. Flash gives the lens and image sensor plenty of light to record an image.

Mode Dial – Mode are the parts used on digital cameras to change the camera's mode.

Zoom Toggle – Zoom Toggle compacts digital cameras with built-in lenses. It offers an optical zoom feature. "T" stands for telescopic and "W" stands for a wide-angle view. It gives the full range of zoom on the camera.

Film/Pixels (or CCD) - Image is produced here.

Diaphragm - Controls the amount of light that enters the camera.

How a Camera Works

A camera is simply an optical device or light-tight box. It works by a mechanism where it allows light to enter at the opposite side of the box. This opposite side is a piece of light-sensitive material which has optical sensitivity.

In an early history of the camera, the light-sensitive medium was made by a glass plate. That glass plate had a slide in front of it. The task of it to keep light from entering. On the other side, the way for letting the light in was a cap when a photograph or a picture drawn by light was to be taken.

In front of the glass plate, the slide was removed and then the cap removed. It is replaced when a certain count had been reached at it’s desired position. In front of the glass plate, the dark slide was replaced. Finally, the plate processed to reveal the image and we can see a visual image.

Nowadays, all modern cameras work exactly in the same way. Additionally, a lens is a more important part of an upgraded level of photography. It is to let the light enter and be focused. A lens has been given a diaphragm to adjust the amount of light. Further, a shutter has also been fitted there to accurate the duration that the light is allowed access to the light-sensitive medium.

A photoelectronic device called pixels is now replaced the glass plates which were replaced by film earlier. Silicon silver fits these arrays and silicon silver is called a sensor. It processed the image formed and finally store electronically to a memory.

Conclusion

It's essential to know “How a Camera Works" if you want to b a Pro-Photographer, just read through this article. This article will definitely help you to understand the process by which a camera works.
